The Friends of India Society International UK (FISI UK), one of the most influential and trusted voices of India in the United Kingdom, is set to celebrate its glorious 50th anniversary with a Golden Jubilee event on June 28. The landmark celebration will take place at ‘The Bhavans’, a prestigious cultural centre located in West Kensington. This historic occasion will be attended by numerous Members of Parliament from the UK and Europe, diplomats, policy experts, and prominent leaders of the diaspora community.

FISI UK President Madhuresh Mishra and Media Coordinator Vinay Pujari stated that the journey of FISI UK, which began during the Emergency era, has now achieved global recognition. When a small group of committed Indian diaspora activists founded FISI UK in 1976, the global landscape was entirely different. India was navigating the turbulent phase of the Emergency, and the political voice of Indian immigrants in Britain was virtually nonexistent in the corridors of power. However, over the past five decades, guided by its core principles of Truth, Integrity, and Cohesion, the organization has successfully established a robust narrative in favour of India within the British Parliament (Westminster).

A Golden Jubilee at a Historic Turning Point : The 50th anniversary of FISI UK arrives at an extraordinary historic milestone, as the landmark India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement is set to enter into force on July 15, 2026. This monumental agreement is projected to boost bilateral trade by more than £25 billion annually. The 1.9 million (19 lakh) British-Indian diaspora members have played a pivotal role in strengthening the “Living Bridge” between India and the UK- a concept famously defined by Indian Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi-and FISI UK has stood as a principal architect of this very bridge.

The Non-Resident Indian Community,The New Strategic Front: Through its recent research paper titled “Diaspora: The New Strategic Front,” FISI UK has highlighted that the Indian community in the United Kingdom is no longer confined merely to passive cultural preservation. Instead, it has transformed into an active force driving bilateral diplomacy, soft power, and international trade. In the 2024-25 financial year alone, Indian Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the UK generated over 6,000 new jobs. Whether it is advocating in the British Parliament for the rights of persecuted Hindu minorities fleeing post-CAA environments, or firmly opposing anti-India elements that disrupted the public lecture of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) at the University of London, FISI UK remains resolutely at the forefront of countering disinformation with hard facts. As FISI UK marks the completion of its 50 distinguished years, this milestone will further reinforce its resolve to ensure that India-UK relations write a new chapter of global leadership, technology, and trade in the coming decades.

On this occasion, a special heritage and research initiative, ‘SMRITI’ (Stories, Memories, Routes & Indian Trailblazers Identified), will also be digitally launched by FISI UK. The objective of this project is to document and preserve the lives, struggles, and contributions of great Indians – such as Swami Vivekananda and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar – who lived, studied, and worked in the UK. Under ‘The SMRITI Journey,’ this shared cultural heritage will be showcased on a global stage in the coming times through the Smriti Heritage Magazine, guided heritage tours, and a ‘Blue Plaque’ recognition campaign.
