London: The second day of London Tech Week 2026 at Olympia London showcased the United Kingdom’s ambitious AI strategy. The UK Government announced one of the largest commitments to Artificial Intelligence in the nation’s history, unveiling a £1.1 billion AI Hardware Plan. From Technology Secretary Liz Kendall to Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, the message from every speaker was clear:

“Britain will win the global AI race.”

During her address, Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), said that the United Kingdom is uniquely positioned to lead the AI era, driven by British innovation, entrepreneurship, and ambition.

Presenting details of the government’s £1.1 billion AI Hardware Plan, Kendall announced:

£750 million for a new National AI Supercomputer, scheduled to be operational by 2030.
£120 million for the AI Hardware Innovation Programme.
£150 million for the procurement of next-generation AI Inference Chips.

She noted that global AI leaders such as DeepMind, Anthropic, and OpenAI are expanding their presence in the UK, while Isomorphic Labs is using AI to significantly reduce the time required to develop new medicines.

Liz Kendall stated:

“The choice is not between having AI or not having AI. The choice is how we shape AI in line with our interests and values. This government’s position is clear we will make AI a technology that works for everyone.”

Sovereign AI Britain’s New Identity

Kendall also elaborated on the concept of Sovereign AI.

She said:

“AI sovereignty does not mean going it alone. It means building the best and using the best. When nearly 70 percent of global AI compute capacity is concentrated in the hands of just five companies, the UK must strengthen its strategic control over this technology.”

“AI Will Revolutionize the Justice System as Well”
David Lammy, Deputy Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy announced the broader adoption of AI within the justice system, stating that AI-powered Legal Assistants will help legal professionals manage routine casework more efficiently.

He explained that the Justice Transcribe system will save the equivalent of approximately 18,750 probation officer days every year, helping to reduce court backlogs and improve judicial efficiency.

Dr. Jan Goetz, CEO, IQM Quantum Computers

Speaking during the Quantum Showcase, Dr. Jan Goetz, CEO of IQM Quantum Computers, said that when the extraordinary capabilities of quantum computing are combined with AI, the impact on industry, science, and society will be transformational.

He noted that quantum computing has the potential to dramatically increase computational power and efficiency.

Posing the question:

“When will the true convergence of AI and Quantum take place?”

He answered:

“That moment is not far away.”
